Waking up early and loving it

Waking up early hasn’t always been easy for me. In fact, I set a goal for myself to get up at 5:15 every single morning and it took me two whole months to actually do it for the first time. I set my alarm every night, but when it would go off at 5:15, I’d turn it off and go back to sleep. Eventually I realized that just because I had set a goal for myself didn’t mean I was on the right path. I hadn’t put anything into action. I didn’t have any accountability!

Before I tell you how I turned waking up early into a habit that I actually enjoy, let me first tell you why it’s important to me to do it. I am a strong believer in the power of your WHY. If you aren’t sure why you are doing something, you’re probably going to quit. You have to have a reason- a STRONG reason- that is going to keep you going when things get tough. Things always get difficult at one point or another. What sets you apart is how you deal with those struggles and setbacks.

I have listened to so many podcasts and read so many books that talk about things that successful people do, and one of the common themes is getting up early. Here’s the thing- getting up before the rest of the world has so many benefits! There aren’t many things to distract you. Your children are still sleeping (hopefully), nobody is posting on Facebook, and things are quiet. You are more productive fresh out of bed, and you have no time to come up with excuses! Not to mention, working out first thing in the morning provides you with energy and a feeling of accomplishment before you even start your day. I knew that if I wanted to be successful in my health AND business goals, I needed to just DO it and figure out how to make it work for me.

I’m going to share with you what I have put in place to help me stick to this early morning routine. That doesn’t mean that all of these things will work for you, but maybe it will give you a starting point!

  1. Two Alarms. I set the alarm on my FitBit for 5:10 and the alarm on my phone for 5:15. I almost always turn off my FitBit alarm and fall back asleep, but I never go back to sleep after my phone alarm goes off. I’m not sure why this works for me, but it gives me that “snooze” feeling and I feel like I’m getting extra time- even if it’s only 5 more minutes.

  2. Energize.  I keep Energize (from the Beachbody Performance Line) on my nightstand, along with 8 ounces of water in a shaker cup. After my alarm goes off, I sit up in bed, measure and shake my Energize, and drink it while sitting in bed. Energize is a pre-workout drink with natural caffeine from guarana and green tea.  It gives you an energy boost, helps you push harder and longer, and helps with muscle recovery.  I give it about 15-20 minutes to kick in while I catch up on messages and emails from the night before, and then I get up and get dressed. Drinking this before I step out of bed gives me the boost I need to wake up.  If this sounds like something you’d like to try, email me at erica.tehonica@mac.com so I can help!

  3. Accountability.  I started with an accountability texting buddy! Every morning when we were awake, we would text each other to say good morning! I knew that I couldn’t let her down and she would be waiting for my text every morning. I even told her to call me out on Facebook if she didn’t hear from me.  Once I felt good in my routine, I ended the texting, but I started an accountability group on Facebook called the 5am Club. We all get up within the 5:00 hour and just check in when we are awake! This helps so much! I hate letting people down, so it forces me to do what I said I was going to do- even on the days when I don’t feel like it.

Wake up early and workout

These things are what I have put in place to help me be successful. It took my body about 2 weeks to adjust to the earlier wake up time, but once I did, I actually started looking forward to it.  I love having my workout done first thing in the morning because it sets the tone for the rest of my day.  You can dream and wish all you want, but if you don’t put systems and accountability in place, you’ll never see those dreams to reality. That’s something I continue to learn every single day as I work towards better health and building a business.

If you would like to join the (FREE) 5am Club, please fill out this short form and I will be in touch within 24 hours!
